Whitesands Bay

Pembrokeshire holiday cottages - Whitesands Bay

Pembrokeshire holiday cottages… Pembrokeshire is justifiably famous for it’s magnificent coastline and offshore Islands, the larger of which include Skomer Island, Caldey Island, Skokholm Island and Ramsey Island. There are boats and landing points to most of these islands, and all are of national and/or international importance for their natural history, flora and fauna. The 170 miles of coastline, of striking bays with high cliffs and secluded  golden beaches are a major attraction for holidaymakers and walkers alike; if you seek a tradtional Pembrokeshire holiday cottage in the National Park coast, you will find plenty of variety. Indeed, with tourism being one of the main economies in the area, Pembrokeshire holiday cottages have become a perrenial favourite with tourists, in part due to the traditional style of the Pembrokeshire Cottage, and of course due to the areas natural attractions.

Coastal Path

The 186 miles of Pembrokeshire Coastal Path is the UK’s only coastal National Park and is a challenge to hiking enthusiasts who are attracted to the magnificent vistas and clean sea air. For the less energetic there are many ways to ‘hop’ on and off the path at various intervals and walk bits of the coastal path at a time and take in the stunning views that Pembrokeshire has to offer; though many do the whole 186 miles over a couple of weeks! The path starts (or ends!) at Amroth and follows the coast to the northern ending (or beginning!) at Poppit Sands near St. Dogmaels at the border or Ceredigion. The coastal path travels through many famous picturesque tourist hotspots like Tenby in the South with the nearby monastic island of Caldey, Marloes, Whitesands beach, Newgale, Broad Haven, Little Haven, Freshwater East and West; it also passes through the internationally significant harbour of Milford Haven. It also passes through some less frequented and more secluded areas that have loyal visitors who appreciate rural peace and quiet. For those seeking a ‘get away from it all’ break, choosing a Pembrokeshire holiday cottage is an ideal choice as there are many coastal holiday cottages as well as holiday cottages in Pembrokeshire further inland dotted about the many villages.

The path then snakes around the deep estuaries and inlets to pass the tiny city of St. David’s. The UK’s smallest city and site of arguably the most architecturally significant cathedral in Wales. The building is made from a purple sandstone which is quarred nearby. There are many tradtional Pembrokeshire holiday cottages within the vacinity of St. Davids, for those wishing to stay there.

Bustling towns of Haverfordwest, Tenby, Pembroke Dock, Narberth and Milford Haven provide holidaymakers with a shopping experience. The County is also famous for castles. The comic film jabberwocky was filmed at Pembroke castle while the magnificent Manorbier castle is perched over a fine beach. Other fine castles at Carew, HaverfordWest and Narberth are also worth a visit. Saundersfoot is a popular destination for holiday makers enjoying the picturesque harbour, village and beach; indeed many Pembrokeshire holiday cottages can be found in these areas, an ideal starting point is our holiday cottage deal blog, which brings you the latest discounts from around the UK.

Wildlife

Pembrokeshire is an important area for wildlife. Wildlife enthusiasts will delight in the enigmatic Chough which can be seen on the coastal path. This red beaked crow can be heard regularly making its distinctive call and is sometimes accompanied by Marsh Harrier, Rock Pippit and the other seabirds – for which this areas is internationally important. The Island of Skomer can be reached by boat from the mainland departure point of Martins Haven, (the boats don’t run everyday or in severe weather, please check with the local tourist office) and contains the most comprehensive seabird colony in Southern Britain. With Puffins, Razorbills, Guillemotts, Arctic Terns and the worlds largest colony of Manx Shearwater. For songbird lovers one can spot the rare Whitethroat and the rare Skomer Vole if very lucky.

Preseli Hills

The often overlooked Preseli Hills, which is still part of Pembrokeshire National Park, provide walkers with some mild-to-moderately challenging inland walks and spectacular views across the peninsula of south west Wales, and sometimes beyond, depending on the weather. The Preseli’s highest peak is Foel Cwmcerwyn at 536 metres above sea level and overlooks the spendid Pembrokeshire coastline. These lonely hills, whose peaks are dotted throughout the with the remains of prehistoric settlements, are believed to be the home of the unusual Stonehenge bluestone. The striking ancient burial chamber at Pentre Ifan is nestled within the Preseli’s and well worth a visit when visiting Pembrokeshire.
